The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Not all balanced hands with 15-17 HCP qualify for a 1NT opening bid.

Extra, Extra

When bidding notrump, give yourself extra point(s) for a long suit.

No Major Interest

Don’t bid Stayman with 4-3-3-3 distribution.

Jump!

When you open 1NT and partner transfers, you should usually jump with four trumps.

Don’t Jump

When partner transfers and you have four trumps, do not jump with an “ugly” 17-count.

You Gotta Have Clubs

A 1NT response to a 1 opening bid promises clubs.

Six Ever, Five Never

After you respond 1NT, do not introduce a suit that is only five cards long.

He’s Got Ya Covered

When partner opens 1NT and RHO shows a suit, you should proceed as if opener has that suit stopped.

If You Got It, Flaunt It

Once partner passes your opening bid and the auction becomes competitive, you need 18-19 HCP to bid 1NT.

Definitely Not Weak

2NT is never a shutout bid.
