I’LL HAVE A DOUBLE

The VOB Double

With VOB, it is okay to double a 1 or 1 opening bid without a four-card major.

I’m Not Positive

Responder’s double is negative only when partner opens one of a suit and RHO makes a natural overcall in a suit (even a jump).

I’ll Double That

If partner opens one of a suit and RHO makes an artificial two-suited overcall, responder’s double promises 10+ HCP.

Deja Vu All Over Again

When you make a takeout double, and double the same suit again, the second double is still takeout.

Leading Partner On

Strive to make lead-directing doubles of the opponents’ artificial bids.

E.L.C.D. (Equal Level Conversion Double)

If RHO opens 1 or 1, and you have four cards in the unbid major, five diamonds and 12+ HCP, make a takeout double.

She Needs to be Taken Out

After LHO opens, partner passes and RHO responds 1NT, your double is takeout of LHO’s suit.

No “Up the Line” This Time

If partner doubles 1 or 1, and you have both majors, do not respond up the line.

Alive and Kicking

When partner doubles for takeout and RHO redoubles, you don’t need much of an excuse to bid — “points, schmoints.”

May the Force Be With You

After partner’s takeout double, the only forcing response is a cuebid.
