ILLUSTRATIONS OF PARTICIPATION CONDITIONS
AFFECTING OVERALL POSITION IN
KNOCKOUT PLAY
When the team wins only one match. The team does
not receive an overall
award; each player receives a match award pro
rata to his participation
in the match won.
For the following two tables, the following
conventions apply:
P denotes participation in that match (at least
50% of the boards of
that match).
Px denotes the boards played by a player in match
x, expressed in
percent.
All percentages exclude playoff boards.
WHEN THE TEAM WINS TWO MATCHES, LOSING IN THE

RANK = 3/4.

Regardless of timing of sitouts, a player must
play at least 50% of the
total boards and at least 50% of the playoff
match.

matches) to be sure that the
rounds of 16 and 8 will go
without repairings.
_____________________________________________________________________
48 to 64 TEAMS: Same ideas as for 24 to 32
teams. (Qualify 32 teams for
round two.) Watch the middle
column of team numbers
for even numbers of teams to be
sure that two team
numbers in the same half of the
bracket (e.g., 29 and
32) are not involved in a first
round match.
POSTING KNOCKOUT CONDITIONS OF CONTEST
There are a few Sectional and Regional Knockout
Team events held where
there are no written conditions of contest. In
these situations,
conditions of contest must be posted and
announced no later than the
break for comparison of scores in the first match
played.

Policy - August 22, 1984)

FORFEITS IN KO TEAMS
If two teams do not play the final (or
next-to-last) match, by
agreement, this is considered a double forfeit.
For example; the last
two surviving teams decide not to play - it is a
tie for 3/4. Ribbon
qualifications will not be given.
If two teams agree to play, and one team doesn't
come, the team who's
there and pays their entry fee is the winner by
forfeit. The other team
is ranked as described above. (Feb 1992)
PROCEDURE TO CORRECT TEAMS IN WRONG BRACKET
This solution for fixing bracketing errors in
Bracketed KOs was worked
out during a supervisors meeting some time ago.
"Since we will be faced
with the occasional problem in this area
regardless of safeguards at the
Field Supervisor meeting we determined a policy
so we can all resolve
mistakes in the same way.
If the error is found in time to make some change
in the first round, do
so. Usually, however, the problem will be found
late in the first round
or after the first round. To help catch errors
while they are still
correctable, it is suggested that we adopt and
publicize to the players
the following procedure:
When selling, please inform each team
representative to check which
bracket his team is assigned to prior to going to
his table. The
directors should post a list of which tables are
assigned to each
bracket and the high and low bracket indicators
of each bracket near the
assignment rack.
However, if all these attempts to catch errors
fail:
THE TEAM'S FAULT: If the team is placed in too
low a bracket, the team is
disqualified. While you should exhibit some
compassion when a team makes
such an error, the bottom line is, "Sometimes
life is that way!" The
team that was beaten, if any, advances and is
given that match award by
forfeit.
OUR FAULT: If we place a team in too high a
bracket and they lose, they
are out. You should return their entry fee and
give them a free play to
a later event of their choice at the tournament
which the ACBL will
support. You can also arrange (with this office)
for a free play at an
upcoming NABC.
If we place a team in too low a bracket and they
win, the losing team
gets a forfeit win and the winning team is moved
to an appropriate
bracket as determined by the DIC for the second
round. The moved team's
new bracket will most likely be nine teams for
the second round. This
should now progress to six teams (three
head-to-heads) and then a
three-team round robin in the final. There will
be three distinct ranks
(1st, 2nd, 3rd) out of the finals and the three
losers of the semifinal
will be tied for 4/6. Only teams that have lost
one and tied one should
be awarded a 2/3 tie. Two teams in the finals
tied with a win and a tie
should continue with four boards to break the
tie. The normal playoffs
for 5/8 are not allowed because six teams from
that bracket will receive
gold points."
KOS.033 (PAGE 6)
________________
SUGGESTED FORMAT WITH FEWER THAN EIGHT TEAMS
3 Teams Two session Round Robin. Top two teams
continue the 3rd
session with full carryover. Cut to
two teams after 28-board
matches. The finals with full carryover
becomes a 56-board
match. Ties are broken by IMP quotient
(total IMPs won
divided by total IMPs lost).
4 Teams One session, 28-board semi-final. Two
sessions, 56-board
final.
5 Teams One session Round Robin where the top
four teams (based on
victory points) continue with full
carryover. One session
semi-final (1st place has a choice of
semifinal opponent) and
a one session final with full carryover
from the Round Robin.
First cut comes after the 7-board
matches; semi-finals are
28-board matches plus 7-boards from the
Round Robin; finals
are a 28-board match plus 7-boards from
the Round Robin. Ties
are broken (1) total number of matches,
(2) head-to-head
results, (3) result against the highest
qualified team not
involved in the tie, (4) result against
the second highest
qualified team not involved in the tie,
etc.
6 Teams One session Round Robin (two groups of
three teams - in a
seeded event, 1, 4, 5 = 1 group, 2, 3,
6 = 1 group). Top two
in each group continue with full
carryover. First cut comes
after 14-board matches. Semi-finals
are 28-board matches plus
the 7-board carryover from the Round
Robin. Finals are a
28-board match.
7 Teams Two head-to-head matches and
one-three-way match (two teams to
continue). In a seeded event, 1, 4, 7
= 1 group. The two
qualifiers from the three-way will
continue play in a 28-board
match for the semi-finals with full
carryover from the first
14 boards. The winner of the 2 vs. 6
match and the 3 vs. 5
match play a 28-board match in the
semi-finals. The finals
are a 28-board match.
HANDICAPPED
The formula for computing the handicap in
handicapped knockout team
games is N x Log10 [(40 + {L/2} + H)/(40 + {L *
3/2})]
where N = the number of boards per match
H = the average masterpoint holding of all
team members for the
team with more masterpoints per member
L = the average masterpoint holding of all
team members for the
team with fewer masterpoints per
member.
Upon written application management may approve
handicap events with a
different handicap formula. (Board of Directors
- April, 1995)
KOS.033 (PAGE

HANDICAP FORMULA FOR KNOCKOUT TEAM GAMES
The Formula for imps per board handicap is
N x Log10 [(40 + {L/2} + H)/(40 + {L * 3/2})]
This table assumes a 24 Board Match. If not,
multiply the result by the
number of boards in the match and divide by 24
Teams with Higher Average
Masterpts.

This example generates a table of winners at an
even number.
Hold first-match 3-way tickets; give them out
when they report. All
three 3-way tickets have the same "loser Go To"
since there is only one
loser. The two advancing teams get assignments
written on their tickets
when they report.
