Alert - A verbal and visual procedure given by the partner of the player making an conventional agreement or unusual call.  Optionally, the opponents may then inquire about the meaning of the alert, ensuring all players are aware of the  special partnership agreement.

Left Hand Opponent opens 1 Notrump and partner makes a conventional 2D call.  The partner of the conventional bidder says "Alert", momentarily tapping the alert card on the table.  Playing face to face Bridge, under no circumstance does the player making the alert ever self-alert their own bid; playing online Bridge a player indeed does self alert since the software prevents one's partner from viewing the alert procedure - only the opponents' see online alerts.
