Kalamazoo Tray - In 1891, a duplicate tray was invented, used to hold the cards separately so players could replay the identical cards.  During that period, the boards were called Kalamazoo Tray

Khedive - An early name of Bridge by players in the French Riviera, believed to have Turkish origins.

Kibitzer - A spectator who watches players at the Bridge table, according to Laws 11 and 76.  The term Kibitzer is derived from the German green plover, an inquisitive bird.

Kick - To Double the opponents.

Killed - To play very poorly or overtake an player's position (card).

King - The second highest-ranking card (four Kings are in the deck).  See Example and Card Names

 


Duplicate

King or Queen of Bridge - This honorary title is awarded to a Junior Corp member who is a graduating high school senior. Cited for outstanding tournament performance, this Junior player is someone who has excelled also in bridge-related administrative, recreational and promotional activities. The ACBL Educational Foundation, funded by a grant from the Homer Shoop/International Palace of Sports, presents a $1000 scholarship to the annual winner.

King without a Moustache - The colloquial term referring to the K (King of Hearts)

KISS (K.I.S.S.) - The acronym for "Keep It Simple, ..." (Stupid, Sweetie, etc).  In general, KISS implies easy to understand and remember partnership agreements.  Also see Momma-Papa

Kiss of Death - To receive a Matchpoint score of minus 200 (-200), which is often the lowest score received in a partscore duplicate game.

Knave - Referring the the Jack.

1.

An informal tap on the table, indicating partner's alertable Call.

2.

An improper form of "Pass" by a casual player, including the action of tapping on the table.


Play

Knockout Squeeze - A three-suited squeeze, including trump.  The declarer plays towards a ruffing position, forcing opponent in second seat to forfeit an important trump holding or discard a possible side suit winner.  See Example
 

 


Duplicate

Knockout Tournament - An event where a four player team splits up into pairs, competing against another team for a round (often 28 boards).  At one table, the pair sits East-West, while their partner's sit North-South at the other table.  After the round, the results are compared using IMP scoring and the winner progresses to the next round against another winning team.  Further rounds continue until only one team remains.
