and response looks deceptively simple.\u00a0 Yes, right you are on both accounts!\u00a0 In this episode we\u00a0 delve deeper into Suit Quality, Self-Sustaining Suits, Losing Trick Count, Cover Cards and how to bid when its the opponents who made a pesky 2 or 3 level preemptive bid.<\/p>\n<p>As we saw in the prior section, preemptive styles come in three forms:<br \/>\naggressively hot preemptors willing to take more risks, conservatively mild preemptors requiring solid values and disciplined weak bidders bidding somewhere in between.\u00a0 When it comes to considering honors in their long suit, aggressive types are likely to get by with 4 of the top 6 (including the 9 spot), conservative preemptors look for 2 of the top 3 honors and disciplined are probably okay preempting 3 of the top 5.\u00a0 Since it is imperative to have solid partnership agreements as a prerequisite to finding the best contracts, it seems prudent to spend some time discussing partnership bidding styles in different situations.<\/p>\n<p>Our aggressive preemptors tend not to worry as much about vulnerability compared to a conservative bidder.\u00a0 Same when it comes to seat position \u2013 aggressive types are less concerned preempting with so-so values in the second seat while conservative types are sensitive to the fact the preempt has a 50-50 chance to challenge partner\u2019s strong hand.\u00a0 And our aggressive bidder is likely to be friskier when holding a long Spade suit, knowing the opponents have to overcall at the next higher bidding level to compete.<br \/>\nThe following worthless major suit, and<br \/>\n&#8211; aggressive players may consider preempting with a major suit including a useful honor.<\/p>\n<p>How about preempting with a void?\u00a0 It\u2019s probably fine for the most aggressive players, less so for our conservative and disciplined bidders.\u00a0 Regarding useful honors in a side suit, conservative players may tolerate one useful side suit honor, perhaps 2 mediocre side suit honors\u00a0 for our disciplined preemptor, while our aggressive bidders might even preempt at the 3 level with an outside Ace (a bit heavy assuming good honors also in the preempt suit, otherwise quite undisciplined).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, positive human environmental factors provide our aggressive bidders an implied level of immunity when preempting.\u00a0 Factors include one\u2019s skill level, memory and one\u2019s ability to concentrate on a myriad of topics.\u00a0 Sill level, memory and concentration, as well as one\u2019s attitude, risk, and partnership trust all influence the boldness of our preemptive player.<\/p>\n<p>Would you or partner consider preempting in the third seat with a 5 card major?<br \/>\nWhile third seat is the best for preempts, hopefully your shape will be 5-4-3-1 shape.<br \/>\nIf so, use caution bidding in the fifth seat, responding to partner\u2019s third seat bidding.<\/p>\n<p>Friendly advice to consider: In fifth seat, only raise partner to 3 level with 4 trump<br \/>\n(more details below).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth Seat \u2013 NO 2 Level Preempts<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>In fourth seat, the bidder can always passout the auction.\u00a0 So we bid with competitive values, including the Rule of 15 (adding our honors to the number of Spades).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, opening of 2 Diamonds, 2 Hearts, or 2 Spades in fourth\/passout seat shows:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A good 6-7 LTC hand<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Good Semi Self-Sustaining Suit and 2
