S. I.\u201d (Do Something Intelligent!)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Whew, who would have thought that a double by partner could have so might different meanings depending on the content of the overall bidding?\u00a0 But fear not, regardless whether you learn best through memorization, understanding the logic behind a given lead, or a bit of both BridgeHands will provide you to answers to find the best lead.\u00a0 Of course, it helps if your partner is on the same wavelength!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Lightner Double:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Typically requires the lead of the dummy\u2019s first bid suit, allowing partner to quickly take tricks to set the opponents contract before they can pitch losers on side suits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Generally declarer has bid to 5 or 6 level (trump or Notrump), however Lightner doubles are still on against lower level Notrump contracts (3N, perhaps 2N).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Excludes normal suit lead (sequence, etc.) by opening partner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Excludes the lead of the trump suit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>May call for the lead of the suit inferred by the dummy based on aggregate auction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Excludes situations when the opponents have made a high-level sacrifice and partner has made a penalty double.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>General guide for belated doubles:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Without a double, favor leading the suit of stronger partner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; With a belated double, generally find a different lead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Consider whether partner could have comfortably shown support but did not do so<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; Occasionally, a belated double is \u201cfor business,\u201d seeking a normal lead and looking for a juicy penalty.\u00a0\u00a0 Also, the double may confirm the lead of a long minor suit requesting the partner to lead the long, strong suit \u2013 particularly when opponents are in a high level Notrump contract and partner has an outside suit entry.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples (In all hands, South is the declarer, North the dummy):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">South<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">North<\/span><br \/>\n(1H) \u2013 (1S);<br \/>\n(4H) \u2013 (4N);<br \/>\n(5H) \u2013 (6H) \u2013 X;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Requires the lead of a Spade<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">North<\/span><\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">South<\/span><br \/>\n(1D) \u2013 (1H);<br \/>\n(4N) \u2013 (5H);<br \/>\n(6H) \u2013 X;
